The International Centre for Environment Audit and Sustainable Development (iCED) has the unique distinction of being the country's first ever GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment)five-star rated green building. Developed on the GRIHA principles, glass for UPVC windows has played an important role in creating the project on the concept of sustainable design. Located at Jaipur, the institute has been commissioned by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, after India was chosen as the centre for imparting environmental and sustainable development audit by the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI).

Design Intent

Architects Arkiplan International and Energy Consultant Kamal Cogent conceived the iCED facility as a green building and a host of features were incorporated to reduce the carbon footprint of the building. The ‘Energy Conservation Building Code 2006’ norms were applied for energy efficient design and construction of the building. The site selection, material usage during construction, energy & water efficiency, indoor environment quality, UPVC windows etc., were designed to adhere to green norms and compliance with GRIHA standards.

Building Structure

The architectural emphasis was on the use of local building material & local stone cladding to cut the cost of transportation and to reduce heat transmission. Carbon emission neutrality and energy efficiency was ensured with features like orientation optimization, overhang sizing, skylights for daylight, insulation on walls/roofs, LED & efficient lighting, 100% external lighting on solar PV cells and glass for UPVC windows. The building also used 30% fly ash in concrete, fly ash bricks. Geothermal cooling was implemented by introducing an alternate cooling system which could recycle cool air from below the earth's surface (below 4 meters) into the building complexes. This, coupled with solar chimneys reduced the dependence on air conditioners. Solar Panels were installed for outdoor lighting and heating water. The building also installed self-contained solid waste management system.

Role of Glass

The glass variants used in the project are KT 455 and ST 467. KT 455 was used for the UPVC windows and the facade, while ST 467 was used for the canopy. Since iCED was aimed at being a GRIHA five-star rated project and the design team was looking for specific values of glass, Saint-Gobain suggested KT 455 to meet the requirements of LT, SF and U-value. With increased natural lighting, there was a substantial reduction in consumption of power during daytime. Control devices were also used to lower the lighting levels automatically during daytime.
