Mili Majumdar

Mili Majumdar is Senior Director for the Sustainable Habitat Division at TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi). She has over 23 years of experience in the field of energy and environment with special emphasis on sustainable habitats and urban development. Her expertise spans several aspects of sustainable habitats: policy analysis and development; designing and implementing green buildings; energy-efficiency retrofits in existing buildings; financial viability of green building projects; and other macro issues related to climate change and urban development. She has also played an active role in major policy formulations in the green/energy-efficient building segment in India.Mili is credited with conceptualizing and leading the development of a rating system for green buildings in India known as GRIHA. The rating system addresses the environmental and social concerns of building construction and provides a framework for the development of habitats and buildings that are environment-friendly, cost-effective, and socially responsible.

Mili has edited a book on ‘Energy Efficient Buildings in India’, which is one of the most successful publications in its domain in India. She has also steered the development of a Master’s course on Green Buildings for the Ministry of Urban Development.

Awards and recognitions

Mili was conferred the Construction World Woman of the Year 2011 award by ASAPP media.

Her role in the Indian green building movement

Mili is a member of several prestigious bodies associated with the governance of green buildings in India. She is a member of the Committee for Formulation of Energy Conservation Building Codes for India; a former member of the Expert Committee to assist in environmental clearance of new construction projects and new industrial estates, constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests; and a member of the Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for revising and updating the national building code of India. She is also an Advisor to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission and Glass Academy of Saint-Gobain. She is a Founding Member of the Indian Building Performance Simulation Association; a member of the Expert Appraisal Committee (Infrastructure-2) constituted for the appraisal of infrastructure projects by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (Government of India); and a member of the Assurance Group of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Energy Efficiency in Buildings Project.
