In India, Green Buildings have become popular thanks to the growing construction industry and the tropical nature of our climate. Due to the tropical climate we have a heavy influx of heat and light. Studies have shown that the average annual spending on the energy bill consists of:

35% on cooling load (air-conditioning), and
20% on artificial lighting, in spite of excessive natural light.

Buildings which promote use of renewable energy and recycled / recyclable products,
minimize use of energy, focus on efficient use of water, improve occupant health and comfort are known as Green Buildings.

Today, general awareness of Green Buildings in India is scattered. Though architects have been sporadically adopting concepts like passive architecture and natural air-conditioning, an integrated and holistic approach towards construction of modern Green Structures is yet to emerge. There is a tremendous potential for construction of Green Buildings in India.
